As
governments roll out public policy directing increased biofuel
production for all sectors of the transportation industry, serious
questions around environmental sustainability still remain.Although the
food versus fuel debate -- should arable land be used to grow energy
crops, or food crops be used to fuel our cars instead of our bodies --
has long been a part of the biofuel story, the issue is becoming more
complex.
Michele Kearney's Environmental Blog - Environmental degradation and waning natural resources including energy resources threaten U.S. security. And the loss of renewable natural resources, including forests, fresh water, fish and fertile soils, can drive political instability and conflict in the developing world, and around the globe. In short, natural resoures, energy and the environment are national security issues.

Major Environmental Treaty Tackles Black Carbon as Climate Pollutant
Black carbon, the second most potent climate pollutant, has been
targeted by the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution
(CLRTAP), making it the first international treaty to act on the
critical link between climate change and air pollution.
Once it enters into force, the black carbon amendment requires the
development of national inventories and requests each party to "give

carbon aerosols and tropospheric ozone, both humanmade pollutants
emitted predominantly in the Northern Hemisphere's low- to
mid-latitudes, are most likely pushing the boundary of the tropics
further poleward in that hemisphere, new research shows. While
stratospheric ozone depletion has already been shown to be the primary
driver of the expansion of the tropics in the Southern Hemisphere, the
researchers are the first to report that black carbon and tropospheric
ozone are the most likely primary drivers of the tropical expansion
observed in the Northern Hemisphere.
